About us
t0.technology builds cutting-edge instrumentation for scientific and industrial sensing, with primary focus areas in superconducting quantum sensors for cosmology and astrophysics, radio correlators, and experimental radar. We are a team of researchers who work closely with academia, government, and industry to develop novel systems at the interface of fundamental physics and engineering.
Our work spans cryogenic detector arrays, large-scale radio-frequency systems, FPGA-based embedded electronics, and custom digital signal processing. We design and deploy real instruments that operate in demanding field environments, while maintaining strong ties to open academic research.
Job description
We are seeking a postdoctoral associate with deep expertise in superconducting detector systems — kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) in particular — to lead work spanning detector design, cryogenic integration, optics, and the analysis pipelines that sit on top of them. We will also consider applicants whose primary expertise is in TES or other cryogenic sensor technologies.
The role bridges three tightly linked efforts:
Focal plane array development for mm-wave and sub-mm imaging, photometry, and particle physics.
On-chip spectrometers for astrophysics and chemical sensing.
Multiplexed readout development, to develop our Control and Readout System (CRS) for use in scientific platforms.
This position spans both hardware-facing development and the analysis and detector characterization pipelines. Candidates may emphasize detector physics and design, system integration and cryogenic engineering, or a hybrid of both.
This role is functionally postdoctoral in nature, with strong expectations for technical leadership, open publishing, and delivery of working systems. The successful candidate will work closely with internal hardware, firmware, and software teams, as well as external academic and government collaborators. A postdoctoral associate at t0.technology can be a pathway to a staff scientist role with a large fraction of time reserved for self-directed academic research.
Technical Scope
Depending on background and interests, the role may emphasize one or more of the following areas:
A) Detector Design & Characterization
Design, simulation, and layout of superconducting resonators, absorbers, and coupling structures for mm-wave, sub-mm, and THz bands.
Cryogenic characterization of the sensors: responsivity, noise-equivalent power, optical efficiency, etc
B) Cryogenic Integration & Optical Coupling
Focal plane assembly, magnetic and thermal shielding, and sub-Kelvin thermal design.
Optical stack design: filters, lenses, feedhorns or lenslet arrays, and coupling of room-temperature optics to sub-Kelvin sensor arrays.
Integration with dilution refrigerator or other cryogenic platforms, including mechanical and thermal modelling.
C) Readout Software & Analysis Pipelines
Control software development for frequency multiplexed readout for large-scale instruments and laboratory characterization.
Physics simulation environments for co-design of readout, detectors, and digital signal processing systems.
Calibration, image processing and map-making of timestream data
Research Environment & Independent Work
This is a research-focused role within a small, instrument-driven organization. The position includes a significant allocation of time for independent, self-directed research, up to 50%.
Independent research topics must be aligned with current or future scientific, technical, or business interests of t0.technology, but are otherwise at the discretion of the researcher. This work may be conducted on-site or through collaboration with external partners at universities, observatories, or research institutes. We actively support researchers holding visitor or cross-appointed status within academic collaborations.
Independent research is expected to result in publishable outcomes and will be supported by the company through access to equipment, data, and project resources.
A successful candidate is expected to:
Make novel contributions to the scientific fields of interest and relevant community.
Collaborate with university groups, observatories, and government research partners.
Balance publishable research with the delivery of systems that tangibly advance the state of the art.
Profile
An ideal candidate will have:
A PhD (or equivalent research-track experience) in physics, astronomy, electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
Demonstrated expertise in superconducting detectors — KIDs, TESs, SNSPDs, or related devices — including design, fabrication interface, or characterization.
Hands-on cryogenic experience: sub-Kelvin platforms, thermometry, wiring, filtering, and vacuum practice.
Familiarity with RF and microwave measurement techniques, and with multiplexed readout architectures.
Strong scientific computing skills and comfort working across device, system, and analysis boundaries.
A track record of research outputs (publications, deployed instruments, or detector development contributions).
Experience with instrument deployment at telescope or field sites is welcome but not required; we are equally interested in candidates whose primary strength is detector physics and laboratory characterization.
Position Details & Working Style
This is a full-time appointment with flexibility in start date, including the possibility of a soft start to complete an existing research commitment. The initial appointment is expected to be two years, with the possibility of extension into a permanent research position by mutual agreement.
t0.technology values close coordination, creativity, and a flat hierarchical structure. We are a small, hands-on team: researchers are expected to be accountable on projects on which others depend, and to contribute collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries. This is not a managerial role, but it does involve shared responsibility for documentation, planning, and deployment consistent with being a co-investigator on research projects.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $75k–$105k CAD, depending on experience.
